February 20, 2022, “Democracy and Other Liberalities” The democratic process is one of our Seven Principles, but there’s a deeper value that undergirds democracy: the value of liberalism. Classical liberalism is the idea that truth, rather than being imposed downward from an authority, rises up between individuals through the free exchange of ideas, opinions, and evidence. The scientific method and democracy are liberal systems. So is the liberal religion of Unitarian Universalism.
